I WANT OFF WHITE WALLS

I want my walls painted off white. Fine, just what color is that? You know, off white! Every off white has a little bit of every color in the rainbow in it. When you see a large off white chart, your eyes just want to cross. The next question is what shade do you want. Do we lean toward green, blue, red, yellow, brown or black? Why not just pick a color and then pick the lightest color on that page.

When working with off whites, bring in the stronger color value in the same color hues to add impact and life in the room. This sets a room off from the crowd.

Whats white, whats black, & whats red all over, we will never know, unless it is a newspaper!

Go Bold or Go Home is the subject of this blog. Strong colors works when using all the elements of color around your home. I painted the roof a gloss white, the body of this house is a flat cranberry, and the facial board & soffit flat white. Paint sheens by themselves create a contrast element. Using the landscape surrounding the home help ground the colors. The dark greens shrubs & lighter green grass, and large Oak Tree frames the colors on the home. Adding colorful annuals will add another color element & texture to enhance the total color experience.

Bring It On. Use all the elements when selecting color, that is what ties it together. Stand back 50 feet from your home see what you have to work with.

Plain Jane no more, my last customer first name was Jane & she let me know that she was plain Jane on color. I gave her some basic color changes on her house, like just making the shutters a bit darker and a little lighter shade on the body of the house. She did not want her house to stand out, just fit in, like everybody else. Jane just had her bathrooms tiles & tub re-glazed white, and was very proud of them & wanted me to see her new look, they had pink.

THE NEW JANE, after I saw all that white tile & tub all the same color, I knew it was time to put some stronger colors in the room to really make the the white tiles pop along with the new shower curtain. I painted the ceiling a light green which appears white but ties the room together with the darker teal on the walls. The color are a little darker than they appear in this picture.

Yes, No plain Jane anymore" she loves the colors". Even in small spaces you can bring in color. Her bath room is about 6 x 10.

What color do I paint my house?
Do I want to just fit in, or make a statement with my colors in a good way? These are type of questions you should ask yourself before going on the " Hunt for Color". Have you ever looked through home magazines for color, find a nice color & try to match that color. Good luck with that idea!

Picking out colors on others houses where you live, is a good start.
If you go a little darker on the trim & lighter on the body of your house you should be all right most of the time. This is assuming your neighbor has good color sense. If the colors are to close, change up the door & shutter colors. If you live near by I can help you with your color selection.

Last week I had a job where I painted only the baseboards & jams. The color of choice was white with a satin finish. After four coats of paint these boards " glowed ".

I never thought of it before, the baseboard & jam becoming the accent element, as opposed to the strong colors on the walls. Every Day We Are Moving Through Color. Think about it, before pulling out of your driveway, what colors are around you, you are at the stop sign, a new set of colors, you are at your favored coffee shop, colors changes again, this goes on all day and we really don't think much about it.

I really never thought about walking through color until last week. A customer of mine wanted me to paint her dark panel walls a light blue color. I also suggest an accent color a couple shades darker on a smaller wall. As I was changing the color, the room was taking on a new life. I felt like I was in a swimming pool. The room became a very soothing & relaxing. When you enter the kitchen of this home, you felt the calming affect of this light blue color. The room had lots of windows to let the light in, but this light blue had a very powerful calming affect.

This weekend take a few minutes and notice all the different color combinations you are passing through. Creating Happiness with Color.

In fact, your walls would sort of just float with your furniture and art work, working in harmony with each other. You would really see the power of white. You could still throw in an accent wall for a splash of excitement.

Baseball field on the Ceiling of your son's room? Different yes in deed, but why let all that real estate go to waste. Many themes can be added to your ceilings that will add unexpected color & happiness to your home. Ask your son or daughter what they would like to see on their ceiling. Your Forgotten Wall in your Home. Gary, what do you mean forgotten wall? I know where all the walls in my home are. Your forgotten wall is really called the fifth wall. The fifth wall, is the ceiling in your home. What are you doing with it? I would bet they are white. Did you know if you paint your ceiling a lighter shade of your wall color, it unifies the room. Depending on the shade you select it will appear to be white.

The Pink Room for your little girl. Girls are born with a gene for pink. Last fall I painted a young girl's room pink. The walls were a strong red rose pink and the ceiling was a lighter shade of pink. The doors, baseboards & trim were white. This room jump off the page with "coolness". The ceiling appeared to be white even though I painted it pink.

Not for Everybody! Would you paint your ceiling a deep bold red with a lighter color on the walls? You will be seeing this in some homes in the near future. This is a great way to add life to a room without buying new furniture. You do need to work with all the existing colors in that room. Remember your fifth wall. Creating happiness with color.

Why do the Colors work?
While having my coffee & bagel at Panera's, I asked myself, why do I keep coming back. Obviously I like it, but why? Well, the colors come together & put you in a relaxed state. The room feels bright & inviting. Did you know they have more than one hundred and seventy five lights illumining more twenty colors on the walls. This did not count the carpet, chairs, tables, art work, florals, and the bread products. All these elements working together is the emotion you feel, which sets the mood you are comfortable with at Panera's.
The Colors in your home creates a Mood.
We go to different spaces in our home when we want to relax vs. waking up. For most of us, the kitchen is the wake up zone. Warm or brighter colors will achieve the goal of waking you up in the morning. Likewise, darker colors help reduce stress & chill the mind. Amazing how light and color creates moods! Why Fear Color?

I guess what we are not sure of, we avoid. When I was a little kid I always liked the color red. You could wear a red shirt but not red pants. Mom would "say Gary, red pants are for girls", how about red shoes, same answer. We really are influenced by our parents view point. Times change, A guy can wear about any color pair of pants & shirt he's comfortable wearing today. Personal, I have trouble with the color pink, maybe some day I will wear a pink shirt.
Color selections in your home works the same way. Maybe the house you grew up in had green walls in every room, you probably never want to ever see a green wall again. Then again, some colors just seem to make sense to You. Our kitchen was yellow, I though all kitchens were suppose to be yellow, I still like yellow kitchens.
Most people just want to fit in with what everybody else is doing. They want to have there home just few shades different from the home across the street. I can help you with Color Fear. " I create happiness with color". No wonder, I gave up selling insurance, not enough Color.

The Power of Light on Color

If you have a beach house which faces east & west with large exposed windows, your walls will change colors many times during the day.
A few years back, I painted a house that faced east & west inland away from the water. The home owner choice a strong orange brown color. In the morning the color was to strong, by lunch time the color was perfect. After a week of indecision the home owner decided to change the color to a lighter shade in the same color hues.
Light, whether natural or artificial, such as tract lighting system in your home, will have a huge impact on how you will see colors.
